statistics

1. A.) Quantitative. The amount of time, is something that can be measured with a watch. Things that can be measured are quantitative.
B.) Quantitative. Although the data is discrete, the number of students is still recorded in numbers so it is quantitative rather than categorical.
C.) Categorical. Because the data is not numerical, it is recorded in excellent, good, fair, and poor it is categorical.
D.) Categorical, the states are non-numerical.
2. A.) Discrete, because the population can not be measured, it must be counted the data is discrete, just as the 2 ½ brothers example is discrete
B.) Continuous , weights can be measured using scales, you can do things with these numbers like find the average weight.
C.) Continuous, Time is almost always continuous because it is measured in seconds or minutes or hours. The sociology part of the question is irrelevant.
D.)Discrete, any time the data is concerned with the number of people the data will be discrete because you can not measure the number of people you must count them.
3.) A.) The variable of interest is survival time after a particular regimen of radiotherapy. The variable is not the type of cancer or the type of treatment because the researcher is estimating time, and these must remain constant for his experiment to be valid.
B.) Quantitative continuous, the data will be recorded in numbers so it is quantitative, with a watch so they are not categorical. Also the data could be manipulated to find the average survival length and such.
4.) Qualitative,
5.) A.) Qualitative

1.) A.) Descriptive statistical study, the data has already been recorded, you are merely putting together a study to present the data. You are not using the data to make inferences about how the house will vote, or any new data.
B.) Descriptive, if this report was compared to the other report, the data would be inferential. Also if this report was used to estimate what the vote would be it would be inferential, however this is only a display of how 435 people felt about taxes.
2.) A.) Discrete quantitative, the number of eggs can be manipulated to find the average number of eggs and so on, so the numbers are quantitative, but they must also be recorded by counting so they are discrete.
B.) Continuous quantitative, unlike the number of eggs, which must be counted, the weight of eggs can be measured on a scale.
